Forced marriage

Forced marriage, forced registered partnership refers to the marriage or registration of a partnership between two adults or minors, against the will of at least one of them. Forced marriage refers to the forced maintenance of a marriage or registered partnership against the will of at least one of the parties.


The person concerned is subjected by his or her social or family environment to threats, emotional blackmail, control, restriction of freedom of movement, economic dependence, physical or sexual violence. In a forced marriage, the person concerned is forced to maintain the marriage or registered partnership using the same means of pressure as those described for forced marriage. 


Forced marriage, forced registered partnership and forced marriage are contrary to international and Swiss law. Under article 181a of the Swiss Penal Code, forced marriage and forced registered partnership are offences in their own right. 


Most of the time, people involved in forced marriage, forced registered partnership and forced marriage are exposed to various other criminal offenses, such as threats, coercion, physical and sexual violence.
